Following a Legal Instrument
You can simply and effectively stay up to date with newly published, relevant analysis related to a legal instrument of interest by following the instrument within the Article Citator tool. Following a legal instrument, or a particular provision within that instrument, will allow you to receive in-app notifications and email notifications when investment treaty decisions and awards have referred to the instrument or provision in question.
There are two types of instrument references: all references (any reference to the legal instrument, whether it to be the instrument as a whole or specific provision within the instrument) and specific references (a reference to a specific provision within the legal instrument).

Following a legal instrument
From within the Article Citator tool, you can follow a legal instrument to get notified when newly published analysis of an investment treaty decision or award contains a reference to the instrument.
When following a legal instrument in this way, you will receive notifications for all references to the legal instrument, including references to the instrument as a whole and to specific provisions within the legal instrument.
To follow a legal instrument:
- From the Article Citator page, scroll to the legal instrument you would like to follow
- Open the Actions menu at the top right of the legal instrument card
- Click Follow topic
The legal instrument has now been added to your followed topics.
Following a specific provision within a legal instrument
From within the Article Citator tool, you can follow a specific provision within a legal instrument to get notified when newly published analysis of an investment treaty decision or award contains a reference to a selected provision within the legal instrument.
To follow a specific provision within a legal instrument:
- From the Article Citator page, scroll to the legal instrument you would like to follow
- Select the ‘+’ icon to expand the legal instrument card
- By default, below the instrument details you will see a list of all instrument provisions with references

- Select See All under the provision label for the provision of interest to view the references to the provision
- Open the Actions menu within the references toolbar
- Click Follow Topic
- The selected provision of the legal instrument has now been added to your followed topics.
